A most productive day of raiding, though credit belongs to everyone who put in the hours on Nefarian over the last couple of raids (without a doubt the most challenging normal encounter, taking at least 5x as long as any other encounter to beat).
Halfus HC was our first point of call after having some great tries on Thursday (using 3 tanks 3 healers and seeing a 14% wipe), though the intel suggested that maybe something different might work out better, so we started with a brand new strategy.
We used 3 healers (disc disc hpala), 2 tanks (war dk), 1 interrupter (rsham) and 4 dps (mage dk rogue hunter) which is certainly an interesting raid makeup for a 10 man guild. Mybad (our lock) brought his alt priest to provide the smite power we required (and of course loot his lock wanted dropped, c'est la vie) and the setup looked good from the get go.
We did initially start with 2 rogues (instead of rogue mage) but we quickly discovered that interrupting after the roar required the sneaky tricks of mage blink, and so Bablu came to the rescue.
On the pull we released the Scion, Storm & Whelps, and focused Storm (with our mage combusting onto the whelps at the start), Whelps, Scion and finally Time > Halfus (Time released when Storm dies). Considering it was a brand new tactic for us compared to previous tries it was actually pretty robust, and required little iteration from the start of the raid to the kill.
All told I think it was about 15-20 wipes followed by a kill, with things looking pretty solid for the kill. Theres a video from our holy paladin point of view available, as well as our parse for the kill.
Spirits riding high from the heroic kill we moved to Nefarian (who stole 8 hours of our lives last Saturday in return for a 4% wipe followed by a bunch of wipes which never approached that mark again).
Nothing had really changed tactics wise from our previous attempts, we just needed to find that perfect execution and really get some practice in phase 3 (cause you just know you love it when you wipe because people swim in the lava on p2, right?).
After a few of the usual nervous wipes (mostly focused on p2 noobery - p1 was looking much better than last week) we started getting to phase 2, and things were looking productive.
The kill itself has been a long time coming, but I think we've still got work to do to really nail the tactics on this one. Take a look at the video from our holy paladins point of view, or browse the parse on worldoflogs.
The kill really was only possible thanks to the hard work (and many hours) that a whole bunch of us have put in, so thanks to all those who worked on Nef but weren't there for the kill.
Heroic Blackwing Descent awaits!
